More Than a Business – We're a Family

Holly Bowers: Breaking Barriers in the Transport Industry

In March 2017, Holly Bowers was featured in an article on the Safe Driving for Life website, produced in partnership with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). The article, "Women of the Road Part 2: The LGV Driver", celebrated Holly's journey into the road transport industry and her achievement as one of the youngest women in the UK to qualify as a Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) driver.

Holly's path into transport was unexpected. After working with racehorses, a serious riding accident in 2016 left her unable to continue her career in the equestrian industry. During her recovery, she joined her family's haulage business, initially helping with warehouse operations before progressing to driving deliveries in a 3.5-tonne vehicle. Discovering a passion for driving, she went on to gain both her Category C and Category C+E licences within a matter of months.

In the interview, Holly discussed her experiences as a young woman in a traditionally male-dominated profession, explaining that she is often met with surprise and admiration when arriving at delivery locations. She also highlighted the importance of encouraging more women to consider careers in commercial driving and helping to challenge outdated stereotypes within the industry.

As a third-generation LGV driver working alongside her father and sister in the family business, Holly's story is a testament to determination, resilience, and the growing role of women in the transport sector.

Three Generations Behind the Wheel

Holly and Kate Bowers have proudly become the third generation of their family to qualify as HGV drivers, continuing a long-standing transport tradition at the family-run TLP Group in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Holly achieved her Class 1 licence at just 20 years old and is believed to have been one of the youngest women in the UK to do so. After a serious riding accident ended her career working with racehorses, she joined the family business and progressed through a range of qualifications before becoming an HGV driver.

Kate gained her Class 1 licence the previous year, having started at TLP while still at college before joining the company full-time. Both sisters have followed in the footsteps of their father, Martyn, and grandfather, William, who founded the business more than 30 years ago.

Their achievement reflects the family’s dedication to the transport industry and highlights the growing importance of encouraging more young people to pursue careers in logistics and haulage.
